Boston Bruins vs. Edmonton Oilers Prediction, Preview, and Odds

The Boston Bruins (33-12-11) lost some key players this last summer, but being an incredibly professional organization, they didn’t let that slow them down in the slightest, as the team continues to roll around the top of the Atlantic Division, and with eyes on a deep Stanley Cup run this season, this will be another chance for them to flex their muscles.

In this one, they’ll do battle with the Edmonton Oilers (33-18-1), whose season has done a 180 over the past two months, and with such superstar talent up front, if they can make some significant additions ahead of the trade deadline, this could arguably be the team to beat in a wide-open Western Conference.

Can the Bruins get back top spot in the Atlantic Division?

After spending the majority of the 2023-24 campaign at the top of the Atlantic Division, the Bruins have stumbled as of late, dropping five of their seven games since the All-Star break, pushing them to 33-12-11 on the season, with the team now sitting one point behind the Florida Panthers in the competitive division. On the road this season, Boston has been dominant, posting a 15-5-6 record in 26 games played, and with their goal differential sitting at +38, if they can add another piece or two ahead of the trade deadline, this team has the makings of a tough out when the playoffs roll around.

Leading the way for Boston in 2023-24 is once again superstar forward David Pastrnak, who has put up 35 goals and 80 points in 56 games played thus far, while their dynamic duo in net continue to impress, combining for a 2.64 GAA and a .918 save percentage. Last time out for the Bruins was a much needed win over the Dallas Stars, with multi-point nights for McAvoy and Boqvist leading the way as Jeremy Swayman stopped 43 of the 46 shots on the night, allowing the team to ultimately pick up the dramatic 4-3 shootout victory.

Can the Oilers continue their red-hot run as of late?

The Edmonton Oilers have been the hottest team in the NHL over the past two months, and with second spot in the Pacific Division now in sight, they’ve tallied 20 wins in their past three games, taking them to 33-18-1, just three points behind the Vegas Golden Knights for the valuable second spot in the division. At home this year, Edmonton have excelled with a 17-6-1 record in 24 games played, and with their goal differential sitting at +35 and only improving steadily by the day, this is a team that can make a deep run with another addition or two, and if they can continue great goaltending, they’re a genuine Stanley Cup threat.

Leading the way for the Oilers this season is unsurprisingly their biggest star in Connor McDavid, with an incredible 83 points in 52 games played, and in net the team have seen amazing performances as of late from Stuart Skinner, whose season stats now come in at a 2.57 GAA and a .906 save percentage. Last time out for the Oilers was a dominant road win over the Arizona Coyotes, with multi-point nights for five Oilers players and 22 saves on the night from Stuart Skinner enough to get the job done as the Oilers picked up the much needed 6-3 win to continue their momentum.

Rating:

On paper, this head-to-head rivalry is one of the most even and competitive in recent NHL history, as they have a 5-5 record over that time, and with so much star power all over the ice, it makes for an incredibly intriguing matchup.

However, in their past five games played in Edmonton, the Bruins have come away with a 4-1 record, outscoring the Oilers 13-10, and despite how close all of their matchups have been, the Bruins have the advantage in net, and that will come into play for a much-needed road victory here.

Prediction: Boston +122

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

Despite the prolific offense of the Oilers, when these two teams meet, it’s all about the goaltending, with the under being 8-2 in their past 10 head-to-head encounters, with those games combining to average just 5.2 goals per game.

For the Bruins, the under is 7-3 in their past 10 overall games, with the team allowing under three goals per game over that time, and for the Oilers, the under is 5-5 in their past 10, with just six goals allowed in their past four games on home ice, so while both offenses are loaded with talent, this one will be decided by the elite goaltending matchup.

Keep it simple, take the under.

Prediction: Under 6.5
