EJ Explains: Bank of Canada interest rate hike

The Bank of Canada closed out the year with a 50-basis point hike in December bringing the trend-setting policy rate to 4.25%. The Central Bank has boosted interest rates by four percentage points, in total, over the course of the year in a fight against inflation. This means it will cost more on your variable rate mortgage, and it will cost more money to borrow.
