There are growing international calls to release Niger President Mohamed Bazoum after the country’s military announced a coup and dissolved the constitution on Wednesday. Niger is considered an important ally for countries like France and the U.S. in the fight against an insurgency by jihadist militants in West Africa’s Sahel belt.
