This is not the homestand the Edmonton Oilers were looking for.

After dropping the first three of a five-game set at Rogers Place, Edmonton tries to break the skid when they host the Los Angeles Kings.

The Kings are coming off a win over the Ducks, and with seven wins in their last nine, L.A. has pulled even in points with the Oil in the Pacific. However, they’re still +125 road dogs in the NHL odds on Monday night.

Can L.A. vault Edmonton into a Top-6 playoff spot in the West? Read below for my free Kings vs. Oilers NHL picks.

Kings vs Oilers predictions

The Edmonton Oilers suffered an ugly 6-3 loss to the Flames Saturday, a battle they were almost out of instantly, falling behind 3-0 to their provincial rivals in the first period. It’s been a recurring theme for the Oilers during this three-game slide, as they’ve allowed the opening goal in each of those contests.

However, the red light has been going far more frequently than just the opening goal: Edmonton has surrendered an average of 3.9 goals per game over its last 10.

Even the fifth-best scoring offense in the NHL, which pumps in 3.55 goals per game, couldn’t outscore its problems, as they’ve gone 4-5-1 over that span. Compare that to the previous stretch — an incredible 16-game win streak — where the Oil surrendered just 24 goals in total, a minuscule 1.5 goals against average.

The most goals surrendered during that streak was three, and it happened just twice. Compare that to this current struggle, and the Oilers have allowed six goals three times in their last four losses.

The Los Angeles Kings went to a shootout last game, knocking off the Ducks 3-2. That gives them six wins in eight games since interim head coach Jim Hiller replaced the departed Todd McLellan.

The Kings aren’t an offensive juggernaut, tied for 17th in scoring at 3.07 goals per game, but they do have a powerplay ranked inside the Top 10 with a 22.9% success rate. The PP has ripped off five goals in nine chances over the last three games.

While they’re cooking with the man advantage, the Kings have gone two games without an even-strength goal. Overall, they’re 25th scoring at even strength, 33 back of the Oilers, who are 12th.

The Kings continue to make their hay on the defensive side, however, surrendering a paltry 2.63 goals per contest, a Top-3 mark in the NHL. They shut down the Oilers recently, blanking them 4-0 on February 10, the third game after Edmonton’s lengthy win streak.

That win snapped Edmonton’s four-game win streak in this head-to-head, and they’ve taken seven of the last 10 — which includes a 4-2 series win in the opening round of last year’s playoffs.

Edmonton’s emphasis should be tightening things up on defense, which plays right into L.A.’s hands. While I see the Oilers breaking the streak, the Kings should keep it close.

My best bet: Kings +1.5 (-175 at SIA)

Kings vs Oilers same-game parlay

Sports Interaction

Kings +1.5

Connor McDavid anytime goal

Zach Hyman anytime goal

Connor McDavid failed to score against the Flames, making it a season-long nine straight games the Oilers’ uber-star has gone without a goal. That doesn’t mean he hasn’t been effective, as he’s logged 21 assists over those games, failing to record a point in just one game — that shutout loss to the Kings.

In his previous 25 games against the Kings, McDavid has only gone consecutive games without a goal twice and has goals in seven of his previous 11 regular season games against L.A. Monday is as good a night as any for him to break out.

While McDavid is trying to light the lamp, linemate Zach Hyman has been tearing it up. Hyman potted two goals against the Flames, giving him goals in four straight games.

Since joining the Oilers, Hyman has two goals in 10 games against L.A. but has gone goalless in the last five regular-season meetings.
