A 26-year-old man is dead after a stolen car crashed near M.E. LaZerte High School Tuesday morning, say Edmonton police.

Major collision officers shut down 144 Avenue between 66 and 68 streets for several hours after the 5 a.m. crash.

Speed was a factor in the fatality in which the car was split in two after striking a pole.

“It’s obviously a very high rate of speed,” said acting Sgt. Jeff Knull, adding investigators believe the car had been stolen less than 20 blocks from the scene.

“It was an unoccupied running vehicle taken early in the morning, fairly close to here.”

Drivers in the area experienced delays, with police encouraging them to find other routes.

Four road fatalities in less than a week

The Tuesday road fatality is the city’s fourth in less than a week, with a hit-and-run driver killing a 13-year-old boy on his bicycle on Millwoods Road early last Wednesday.

Adam Edhi was riding his bike to see his girlfriend early that morning when he was struck and killed. Police are still looking for the driver of a blue 2014-2018 Mazda 3.

The fatality was followed by the death of a 40-year-old man on a scooter who was struck as he rolled through a stop sign at 85 Avenue and 106 Street early Saturday morning. The driver in that case tried to provide medical assistance and called 911.

Then early Sunday morning, a 35-year-old man on a motorcycle struck a concrete barrier near Stadium Road when he failed to navigate a turn. He died on scene. Police say speed was a factor.
