Religion, politics collide as new temple opens in northern India

The long-anticipated Hindu temple in the holy city of Ayodhya is only half-finished — and being built where a 16th-century mosque once stood. That history of tension all leads to Monday, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open the temple in a move seen by some analysts and critics as a ploy by his Hindu nationalist party to galvanize voters ahead of spring’s national election.
