In 1983, a group of vendors began setting up in the gravel parking lot to the east of the Arts Barns, which originally housed Edmonton transit buses and was known at the time as the bus barns.

The Fringe Theatre Adventures moved in to share the space with the Old Strathcona Farmers Market (OSFM) in 1995 and with significant renovations, the Arts Barns were created. More significant renovations happened again in 2002 to create the space we know today.

In its 40th year, the OSFM sees the Arts Barns fill with vendors and shoppers every Saturday all year long and this weekend they’re hosting a two-day affair to celebrate the milestone.

Friday will be a ticketed event featuring a night market, food, drinks and live entertainment from 5:30-10 p.m. including DJs, pianist Matt Day and The Retrofits. Saturday is free and along with the regular market open from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., 83 Avenue, a.k.a. Backstreet Plaza, will be closed to cars and filled with roving family-friendly entertainment and music from David Jukebox Leigh and Stevon and Kayla.
