Maple Leafs Look to Snap Skid

The Toronto Maple Leafs lost to the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday, 4-2. They lost both contests of their homestand and have lost three straight games overall. Toronto now heads to the road to begin a four-game road trip with the club 11-3-6 away from Toronto.

The Maple Leafs held a one-goal lead coming out of the second period, but Detroit responded with three in the third to earn the victory. Pontus Holmberg and Mitchell Marner scored goals for Toronto. Marner has seven points over his last five games, including four goals and he is third on the team in points (46). Toronto is fifth in goals per game (3.51) but has been held to three goals or fewer in five of their seven January games.

Illya Samsonov stopped 20 of 23 shots in the loss. This has been a three-goalie rotation with Samsonov (5-3-6, 3.88, .863), Joseph Woll (8-5-1, 2.80, .916), and Martin Jones (8-4-1, 2.30, .924) combining to post the 21st best goals-against average (3.24). Toronto has allowed 13 total goals during the losing streak.

Oilers Look to Extend Winning Streak

The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Montréal Canadiens in overtime on Saturday, 2-1. It was their franchise-record 10th straight victory and their eighth straight victory on the road. Edmonton is 11-6-1 at home this season.

Montréal took the lead with a first-period goal, but Leon Draisaitl tied the score less than a minute into the third. Evan Bouchard then scored on the power-play a little over two minutes into the extra session to give Edmonton the one-goal victory. Connor McDavid had an assist in the contest, and now has nine points over his last five games. Edmonton has been held to just 10 goals over their last four games, but are still sixth in goals per game (3.49).

Stuart Skinner stopped 23 shots and is now 18-9-1 with a 2.63 GAA and a .903 save percentage. Calvin Pickard has been very good as well, going four-to-zero in his six starts, posting a 2.69 GAA and a .902 save percentage. Edmonton is 13th in goals-against average (3.00).

It is hard to go against the team on a 10-game winning streak, and no one is going to make that mistake here. It is not just that Edmonton is winning, but they are getting outstanding goaltending, giving up 17 total goals during the winning streak. That includes allowing just seven in the last five.

That keeps Toronto from being able to pull out a victory in this contest. The Maple Leafs have allowed 13 total goals during their last three games, something you don’t want to do against this hot Oilers team.

Prediction: Take the Edmonton Oilers (-146)

Full-Game Total Pick

Oddsmakers see a high-scoring affair for this contest and, based on last year’s results, that would seem to be logical. The teams combined for 18 total goals in the two games, but that came a year after the teams combined for six goals in both meetings.

Edmonton has given up two or fewer goals in eight straight games, and two is all the Maple Leafs will score here as well. That leaves Edmonton to score more than four to push this game over, but four is how many they will score as well. It is true that Toronto has given up four or more goals in the last three contests, but has yielded one or fewer goals in three of their last four on the road.

Prediction: Go under 6.5 (+126)
