A rapidly rising Omicron subvariant called EG.5, which is circulating in Canada and other countries, has now been designated a variant of interest by the World Health Organization. While this new strain appears to be more infectious and able to sneak past our immune defences, experts aren’t seeing evidence it causes more severe illness.
