The Edmonton Elks’ ground game found traction once again, their passing game was in danger of hitting the ditch, but it was the kicking game that came through in the end of Saturday’s Labour Day Rematch.

After seeing the Calgary Stampeders put together three consecutive fourth-quarter touchdown drives in a 35-31 comeback win in the Labour Day Classic five days earlier, the Elks flipped the script with a comeback of their own in front of 32,422 at Commonwealth Stadium.

Dean Faithfull made up for missing an extra point earlier in the game by booting a 42-yard field goal with no time left on the clock in a 25-23 win over their provincial rivals and improve to 3-10, while Calgary fell to 4-9.

“It’s my first one and I’m just really proud to be able to help the boys. I told them it’s their win, they worked so hard to get that win and I’m just happy I can contribute,” said Faithfull, who walked into the locker-room after the game to the tune of, God Save the Queen. “Although, now it’s God Save the King, so they need to change the song.”

The Elks had all of 21 passing yards to show for the first three quarters, relying on a ground game that accounted for 228 of their 401 net yards of offence. Calgary finished with 346.

Tre Ford completed 14 of 22 passes for 173 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, while rushing eight times for 82 yards, and Kevin Brown led the way with a career-high 143 yards, a touchdown and a fumble on 15 carries.

“One-hundred and 43 yards? Definitely, that’s the most I’ve ever got in a game, period,” said Brown, who opened the scoring with a 45-yard jailbreak up the middle on Edmonton’s opening possession to lead 7-0. “I’m honoured. I mean, give it up to the guys up front, the O-line, and the receivers blocking downfield. I wouldn’t be able to do it without them.”

Calgary’s Jake Maier completed 21 of 29 for 210 yards and two touchdowns, but was all but helpless to move the ball against Edmonton late in the game on the way to three consecutive three-and-outs.

A 37-yard field goal put Calgary on the board before they found the end zone with 6:36 left in the first half. Maier faked the handoff and found backup running back William Langlais for a three-yard touchdown to complete a six-play, 50-yard scoring drive and go ahead 10-7.

Edmonton got a scare when Ford went down after taking a shot to the ribs by Stampeders linebacker Cameron Judge, which left the Elks quarterback gasping for breath before being helped to the sidelines with 1:28 left in the half.

But before heading to the locker-rooms, Calgary went ahead 17-10 on a 10-yard reception in the end zone by Reggie Begelton to cap an eight-play, 65-yard drive that took 1:12.

It was the first time in five games since Ford took over as the starter that the Elks didn’t hold the lead at halftime.

But he was back in to commence the third quarter, only to be intercepted by Stampeders defensive halfback Brad Muhammad, who returned the ball 24 yards into Edmonton territory. It led to a 25-yard field goal by Rene Paredes to take a 20-7 lead.

Ford, who came into the game with five touchdowns and a single interception in four starts, was picked off once again before the quarter ran out, this time by Tre Roberson, the grandson of double-E legend Larry Highbaugh.

After Calgary put another field goal on the board, a 29-yard boot by Paredes to go ahead 23-7, the Elks caught a break in the form of a pass-interference call against Taylor to set up in the red zone.

On third-and-goal from the one yard-line, short-yardage quarterback Taylor Cornelius dove over top of the line to open the fourth quarter trailing 23-13.

But they missed on a two-point conversion toss to Gavin Cobb that would have made it a one-score game.

Ford then found a wide-open Eugene Lewis for a 33-yard gain that eclipsed all 25 passing yards the Elks managed up to that point. And sent the next snap 32 yards downfield to Dillon Mitchell in the end zone.

Faithfull missed the point after to trail by an uncomfortable 23-19 with nine minutes remaining.

But Ford marched back downfield looking for a third straight major, drawing a roughing-the-passer against Stampeders linebacker Micah Awe. Instead, it led to a 40-yard field goal by Faithfull to climb back within one point of Calgary’s lead.

After Edmonton forced their second two-and-out in a row, the offence then converted on third-and-one in their own end, with Ford faking the handoff and taking off down the sideline for 24 yards across midfield.

But a third-and-two attempt by Brown got stuffed before it could even get going, putting the ball in the hands of Calgary’s offence with 1:31 on the clock.

Once again, the Elks defence forced a two-and-out, making it three in a row, to give Ford 36 seconds to move the ball from Edmonton’s 27 yard-line.

Pass interference against Muhammad sent the Elks to Calgary’s 50 yard-line with 14 seconds to go, before a 15-yard reception by Lewis set up the winning field goal.

“It was tough. Obviously, I didn’t like how the first half ended,” said Ford. “We got behind a little bit in the second half and had to do a lot more throwing on first downs, kind of broke some of our own rules because we’ve been running on the majority of first downs. And I think that caught them off guard.

“So, I thought the pass game developed in the second half, because they didn’t know when we were going to throw. The offence came together in the second half and we wouldn’t have done anything without the defence. The defence played amazing in the second half.”
