This grad student is working three jobs to pay for rent, food

Shramana Sarkar is a geology graduate student who works three jobs to afford the rising cost of living. Her rent in St. John’s has doubled. Groceries are 20 per cent more expensive than they were two years ago, according to Statistics Canada. But her wages haven’t kept up, and Sarkar says she is barely finding the time to study.

The 24-year-old is part of a growing number of precarious workers in Canada. These are workers who don’t know how many hours they’ll get in a week or if they’ll be employed next month. Sarkar says if rent and inflation remain this high, she’ll have little choice but to leave Canada.
